Family Fund is the UK’s largest provider of grants to families on low incomes raising disabled or seriously ill children, helping 72,043 families last year, with over £33million in grants and services.
Family Fund provides grants for items such as furniture, clothing, bedding, kitchen appliances and family breaks. These grants help families raising disabled and seriously ill children to have the same opportunities for much needed breaks as others. The Holidays Matter campaign has a commitment to ensure that no one will ever again say the words ‘I’ve never been on holiday’ and Family Fund help this to become a reality for many families with disabled children.
There are many reasons why families want their grant to be for a family break, whether it is to offer a new environment to their children or to spend vital family time together away from the daily stresses they can experience.
With the cost of raising a disabled child being up to three times higher than other children; in many cases these grants are the only way for families to get this vital break away. Many have commented afterwards about how the break strengthens their bond as the family and also tends to increase the happiness and wellbeing of the applicant child.
One child who benefited from a break was Ffion. Ffion was diagnosed with Streptococcus A Sepsis in 2013 which resulted in the amputation of her foot and blindness in her right eye. She frequently spent time in hospital over a period of 12 months and the family hardly got to spend any quality time together. Her mother Helen requested a Haven holiday and booked to go to Greenacres near Aberystwyth.
“At Haven we had the opportunity to create some wonderful family memories together, having fun on the beach and around the pool. The grant allowed us to go and create some early childhood memories for Ffion and Charlie straight away rather than have to save up for a number of years. It provided us with a break when we needed it most.”
